Town Book

The Town Book of Sturton Le Steeple Parish contains hundreds of pages of invaluable information relating to the lives of those who have lived here. The information contained is a valuable resource for the genealogist and local historian alike. The images below are just a few samples of the contents of this book. It is our ambition to display and transcribe the entire contents of the book and make them available on this web site. As the viewer will see from the images below, this is an onerous task, but one that is well worth the effort. As this project is expected to take over a year of work we hope that you will return to see the latest transcriptions and images. The examples below are just a few from the mid 1700’s, a copy of the original followed by a transcription. The original book is kept in the Archives at Bassetlaw Museum in Retford.
